Avalon Waterways: The Details That Made a Difference

I’ve been lucky enough to sail with Avalon Waterways not once, not twice—but I'm currently on my way to three times now. And every time I step onboard, I find myself falling in love with the little things all over again. You know, the kind of details that make you feel genuinely cared for, like someone was really thinking about your comfort when they designed the experience.
This isn’t your typical “cookie-cutter” cruise. Avalon has a way of blending comfort, elegance, and thoughtfulness that truly makes their ships feel like a home away from home—especially when you’re gliding through Europe’s most scenic rivers.
Here are just a few of the things that keep me coming back…
The Club Lounge: Where I Always Feel at Home
I have a favorite spot onboard Avalon ships, and it’s tucked away at the back of the ship: the Club Lounge. It’s quiet, cozy, and wrapped in river views. I love to curl up in one of the comfy chairs with a book, a conversation, or just some time to watch the world float by.
And let’s talk about the grapefruit water. I’m obsessed. It’s one of the flavored waters always available at the self-serve station, and it somehow tastes even better when you’re sipping it while cruising past castles and countryside.
You’ll also find:
All-day coffee (hot and iced)
Flavored waters that change throughout the day
Light snacks to tide you over between meals (I won’t lie—sometimes I go just for the oatmeal cookies or to check to see if they have those AMAZING sugar doughnuts).
It’s a welcoming space where travelers naturally gather, whether for a card game, a quiet moment, or a group movie night before a themed excursion. It's not flashy, but it's so well done.
Rooms That Are Actually Designed for Real Life
Let’s be honest—cruise staterooms aren’t always known for being roomy or relaxing. But Avalon gets it right.
The Panorama Suites are a game-changer. Beds face the window (not the wall!), which means you can lounge in bed and watch Europe roll by. I’ve started more than one morning with a room-service coffee and a blanket wrapped around me as vineyards or cathedrals drift past.
The bathroom deserves its own moment of appreciation too. Not only do they offer a larger-than-expected shower (hallelujah!), but the layout is smart, the lighting is flattering, and the mirror doesn’t fog up the second you turn on the hot water. It’s all these little things that make a big difference when you're living out of a suitcase.
Other thoughtful touches I love:
USB ports right by the bed (no hunting for outlets)
Two different towel colors in each room (simple, but brilliant)
Lighted makeup mirror
Refillable water bottles and eco-conscious practices that never feel forced
Dining That’s Delicious and Down-to-Earth
You won’t find tuxedos or assigned tables on an Avalon cruise, but you will find fresh, flavorful food, served in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
There are a few ways to dine onboard:
Main Dining Room: Perfect for a sit-down breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The menus often reflect the region we’re sailing through, and the chefs do a great job with everything from schnitzel to salads.
Lounge Meals: More casual (and quicker), great for lunch with a view or an easy dinner after a long day exploring.
Room Service Breakfast: Coffee and croissants in bed? Yes, please.
And if you have dietary needs, Avalon’s staff is so attentive. They take allergies seriously, label everything clearly, and are always willing to adapt dishes when needed. I’ve seen the kitchen create beautiful meals for guests with very specific restrictions—and always with a smile.
Service That Feels Like Family
From the moment I board, I’m greeted by name. The staff remembers that I require two Coca-Colas at breakfast, and even that I love the grapefruit water. There's something really special about that kind of care—it doesn't feel like service, it feels like hospitality. something really special about that kind of care—it doesn't feel like service, it feels like hospitality.
There’s no pressure to book future trips while you're still onboard. No pushy sales pitches. Just friendly conversations and a genuine enthusiasm for helping you enjoy the cruise you’re already on.
Even the cruise directors strike the perfect balance between professional and approachable. They’re knowledgeable, engaging, and (best of all) transparent. If there’s a safety concern or something to be aware of during an excursion, they tell you. Not to alarm you—but to empower you. And that earns my respect every time.
Final Thoughts
Avalon Waterways isn’t flashy or over-the-top. It’s thoughtful, relaxed, and beautifully done. The kind of cruise where the scenery is stunning, the beds are cozy, the meals are memorable, and the grapefruit water is always flowing.
If you’ve been curious about river cruising—or you’re just craving a vacation that’s both enriching and effortless—I can’t recommend Avalon enough. It’s a slower, softer way to travel. One that leaves you refreshed, not exhausted.
And as I write this, I’m packing my bags for my third Avalon adventure. So stay tuned—more stories (and river views) coming soon!
