Powering Up Abroad: Adapters & Converters for Europe and the UK

One of the most common questions travelers ask before heading overseas is: “Will my electronics work in Europe or the UK?” The short answer is yes—as long as you bring the right adapter (and sometimes a converter). Here’s exactly what you need to know.

ree

Adapters: Fit the Plug, Not the Power

  • Purpose: An adapter makes your plug physically fit into a different style of outlet.

  • Europe: Most countries use Type C or Type F outlets—two round prongs.

  • UK & Ireland: Use Type G outlets—three rectangular prongs.

  • Important: Adapters do not change the voltage. They only change the shape of the plug.

  • Example: Your U.S. phone charger will need a small adapter so its flat prongs can fit into Europe’s round outlets or the UK’s three-prong outlets.

Converters: Change the Power, Not the Plug

  • Purpose: A converter actually changes the electrical current. Europe and the UK both run on 230V electricity, while the U.S. runs on 110V.

  • When you need one: If your device is only designed for 110V, you’ll need a converter to step down the voltage.

  • How they work: A converter uses a transformer to reduce 230V down to 110V so your device doesn’t get fried.

  • Example: If you pack a 110V-only hairdryer for your London trip, you’ll need a converter to use it safely.

How to Tell What You Need

  1. Check the label: Look at your device or its power brick. If it says “100–240V”, it’s dual voltage—you only need an adapter.

    • Most phones, tablets, laptops, and cameras fall into this category.

  2. Single-voltage devices: If your device only says “120V” (common for hair tools and some small appliances), you’ll need a converter in both Europe and the UK.

  3. High-powered appliances: Hairdryers, curling irons, and straighteners are the biggest culprits. Consider buying a dual-voltage travel version or using the hotel’s instead.

Quick Cheat Sheet

  • Europe (Type C/F plugs, 230V): Adapter required. Converter only if your device is single voltage.

  • UK & Ireland (Type G plugs, 230V): Adapter required. Converter only if your device is single voltage.

  • Dual-voltage devices (100–240V): Just bring the right adapter for the country.

  • Single-voltage devices (110V only): Bring both a converter and an adapter.

Bottom line:

  • Adapters change the shape of the plug.

  • Converters change the voltage of the electricity.

Bring the right one for the right country, and your devices (and nerves) will thank you.
