Raise Your Travel IQ - Picking Airplane Seats

Want to raise your Travel IQ? Think beyond legroom when you choose your airplane seat.

I read an article recently about having a high “Travel IQ,” and it got me thinking about something I see travelers overlook all the time: where you sit on the airplane can affect a lot more than your comfort.

Those seats toward the back of the plane may be free. And believe me, I HATE paying the airlines extra just to choose where I sit. But here's what people don't always consider:

If you have a connection, sitting near the back means you may have a plane full of people getting off before you. Those extra 10 or 15 minutes might matter when you're trying to get from one terminal to another.

On an international trip, your seat can affect you even after you leave the plane. If you land somewhere where you need to clear immigration/passport control, guess who may also be getting into that line ahead of you?

All those people sitting in the rows in front of you.

Suddenly that “free” seat in row 38 doesn't feel quite as free.

If I'm flying nonstop and have nowhere I need to be quickly after landing, I might happily save the money and sit farther back. But if I have a connection, especially an international one, I will always pay to sit closer to the front. I'm not paying for more legroom. (I’m only 5’3”!) I'm paying for time and a little extra margin for error.

That's Travel IQ. And here's the good news: You don't have to travel constantly to have a high Travel IQ.

You can borrow mine.

That's one of the benefits of working with a travel planner. I'm thinking about the ripple effects of the decisions you're making, including the ones you might not even realize matter yet.
