Next summer, I’ll be setting off on a river cruise I’ve dreamed of for years — The Danube from Romania to Budapest, sailing aboard the Avalon Passion beginning July 26, 2026. This itinerary blends everything I love most about travel: rich history, stunning landscapes, charming European towns, and the ease of unpacking once while exploring multiple countries.
This trip is especially meaningful for me because it includes Transylvania — a destination I’ve wanted to visit ever since I discovered, back in sixth grade, that it was actually a real place! And to make it even more exciting, I’ve never visited any of the five countries on this itinerary. Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary are all brand new to me — and I can’t wait to experience them for the first time.
This journey begins long before the ship ever sets sail. Avalon Waterways has created an itinerary that immerses you in the beauty and culture of Eastern Europe — with a night in Bucharest, two nights in Transylvania, seven nights sailing the Danube, and a final night in Budapest, one of Europe’s most enchanting cities.
Before We Cruise: Bucharest & Transylvania
We’ll start in Bucharest, often called the “Paris of the East.” I can’t wait to wander down Victory Avenue, lined with elegant architecture, cafés, and museums. Then, we’ll head into the Carpathian Mountains — a breathtaking drive to Sinaia, where we’ll explore the magnificent Peles Castle, once home to Romanian royalty. Along the way, we’ll stop at Cantacuzino Castle for a local lunch and a taste of Romania’s royal past.
From there, it’s on to Brasov, one of Transylvania’s most picturesque cities. We’ll enjoy a guided tour of its charming old town before venturing to the legendary Bran Castle, forever linked with the tales of Dracula.
All Aboard the Avalon Passion
After our time in Transylvania, we’ll return to Bucharest and embark our ship in Oltenita, where the elegant Avalon Passion awaits. This will be my home for the next seven nights, and I’ll be staying in one of Avalon’s signature Panorama Suites — complete with a floor-to-ceiling wall of glass that transforms into an open-air balcony. There’s nothing quite like waking up to a new European view every morning, coffee in hand, with the river quietly gliding by.
Avalon’s ships are designed for comfort and views — fewer passengers, spacious staterooms, locally inspired cuisine, and friendly service. I’ve cruised a lot over the years, but Avalon’s river cruises feel especially personal and peaceful. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
Our Journey Along the Danube
Each day brings a new discovery:
Rousse, Bulgaria – We’ll explore this charming city, sometimes called “Little Vienna,” or venture out to Veliko Tarnovo, the former Bulgarian capital, filled with stone houses perched on the cliffs above the Yantra River.
Vidin – Famous for the striking Belogradchik Rocks and the imposing Baba Vida Fortress, this day combines dramatic scenery and history.
Iron Gates Gorge – One of the natural highlights of the trip! We’ll sail through this stunning, narrow gorge that forms the border between Serbia and Romania. Later, we’ll visit Lepenski Vir, a fascinating archaeological site dating back thousands of years.
Belgrade, Serbia – A city full of energy and contrast. We’ll visit Saint Sava Cathedral, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, and explore the pedestrian-friendly Knez Mihailova Street lined with shops and cafés.
Novi Sad – A cultural capital with Austro-Hungarian charm. We’ll tour the Petrovaradin Fortress, and for those with a sweet tooth, there’s a visit to the Museum of Beekeeping and Wine Cellar in Sremski Karlovci.
Ilok & Vukovar, Croatia – We’ll enjoy wine tastings and learn about Croatia’s heritage in two of its most historic towns along the Danube.
Mohács, Hungary – Our final stop before Budapest, with options to visit Pécs, home to 4th-century Christian tombs and an organ concert in a local church.
The Grand Finale: Beautiful Budapest
We’ll disembark in Budapest, often called “The Pearl of the Danube.” I’ve been told it’s one of Europe’s most photogenic cities, and I can’t wait to experience it for myself. Our guided sightseeing tour will take us to Heroes’ Square and other highlights, and then we’ll have the afternoon to explore on our own. I plan to relax in one of Budapest’s famous thermal baths, soak up the views from Fisherman’s Bastion, and of course, enjoy some authentic goulash before we say goodbye.
Why Avalon Waterways?
Avalon Waterways does river cruising differently. Their Panorama Suites are 30% larger than the industry standard, featuring beds that face the river — so you always wake up to the view. Onboard dining is locally inspired, and every itinerary includes Avalon Choice® excursions, allowing you to customize your days with Classic, Active, or Discovery experiences. Whether you’re into history, culture, or a little adventure, you can tailor the journey to your style.
And what I love most — Avalon truly cares about sustainability. They partner with Trees4Travel to offset carbon emissions and support global reforestation efforts, making every voyage a little greener.
This itinerary is perfect for travelers who love a mix of history, culture, and scenery — and who want to see a side of Europe that many travelers overlook. From the castles of Transylvania to the vineyards of Croatia, the Iron Gates Gorge, and the lights of Budapest — it’s a journey that feels both exotic and familiar.
If this sounds like your kind of adventure, you can secure your stateroom now with just a $250 per person deposit, and make payments over time until the final payment date of April 28, 2026. I’d love to have some familiar faces join me as we explore this fascinating corner of Europe together.
