If you're considering an Orlando vacation this fall, there's one question you'll need to answer: Do you want screams or smiles? Both Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World offer special-ticket Halloween events, but they are very different experiences. Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando is designed to terrify. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom is designed to celebrate Halloween in a family-friendly way. The good news? Both are fantastic. The trick is choosing the one that's right for your group.

Halloween Horror Nights is widely considered the premier Halloween event in the country. On select nights from late August through early November, Universal Studios Florida transforms into a nightmare-filled playground featuring 10 haunted houses, scare zones throughout the park, live entertainment, specialty food and drinks, and select attractions operating during the event. Universal itself warns that the event may be too intense for children under 13. If you love horror movies, haunted houses, jump scares, and immersive storytelling, this is your event.
For 2026, Universal has already announced Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, featuring two of Halloween Horror Nights' most iconic original characters, along with a haunted house based on the hit horror film Sinners. More haunted house announcements are expected in the coming months, which is part of the fun for HHN fans who eagerly await each reveal.
This year, one of the most anticipated additions is a haunted house based on Stranger Things 5. Guests will step into Hawkins for the final battle against Vecna and experience scenes inspired by the show's final season. For fans of the series, it's likely to be one of the hottest tickets of the Halloween season. Combined with Universal's scare zones and live entertainment, Halloween Horror Nights delivers a true adrenaline rush that is difficult to match anywhere else.

Disney's Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes a completely different approach. Held on select nights from August through Halloween at Magic Kingdom, this separately ticketed event is designed for families and Disney fans of all ages. Guests can wear costumes, collect candy throughout the park, enjoy exclusive character appearances, watch Mickey's Boo-To-You Halloween Parade, experience Disney's Not-So-Spooky Spectacular fireworks, and see the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular stage show. The atmosphere is festive rather than frightening, making it ideal for families with younger children.
One of the biggest differences between the two events is how they make you feel. Halloween Horror Nights is dark, intense, and intentionally unsettling. The goal is to scare you. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is colorful, lighthearted, and full of Halloween fun without the fear. You'll see princesses in costumes, trick-or-treat trails, and smiling Disney villains rather than chainsaw-wielding monsters lurking around corners. Both events offer exclusive entertainment and seasonal food, but they cater to very different audiences.
So which one should you choose? If you're traveling with young children, first-time theme park visitors, or Disney fans, Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is usually the clear winner. If you're a horror fan, traveling with teenagers, or want a genuinely thrilling Halloween experience, Halloween Horror Nights is hard to beat. And for some travelers, the best answer may be both. After all, Orlando is one of the few places where you can spend one night collecting candy with Mickey Mouse and the next trying to escape monsters in the dark. That's a Halloween vacation you'll never forget.
The hardest part isn't choosing Orlando this fall. It's choosing which Halloween event is right for you. Let's make sure you get the tickets, hotel, and game plan before the best dates disappear!
