Let's get to know Tammy!
Travel Specialty: Accessible Travel
Based In: Levittown, Pennsylvania
What got you into the travel business?
My husband and I have always been “those people” who researched every last detail of our vacations—best locations, best hotels, even which ones were actually accessible and stress-free to navigate. Our friends would laugh and say, “You two should just be travel agents!”
After hearing it enough times, I finally decided to give it a try. A few years ago, I turned my passion for planning trips into a career—this time with a focus on accessibility. Now, I get to help travelers (with and without mobility challenges) enjoy dream vacations without the worry of, “Will I really be able to enjoy this?”
Turning my travel obsession into something that opens doors—literally—for others has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
What's the biggest mistake you see travelers make?
It’s hard to pick just one common mistake travelers make, but the biggest one I see is skipping travel insurance. I often hear people say, “I’m young, nothing’s going to happen.” The truth is, you never know when an unexpected health issue—or something else—might come up. It’s always better to have travel insurance and not need it, than to need it and not have it.
When it comes to accessible travel, another big mistake is not knowing the details about your destination. If you’re traveling with a scooter or wheelchair, keep in mind that accessibility rules and standards vary from country to country. Not being prepared can turn what should be a dream vacation into a frustrating experience.
What is one trip you think everyone should take in their life?
In my opinion, one trip everyone should experience is an Alaska cruise. It’s the perfect way to see multiple Alaskan cities all in one journey. My husband and I recently took this trip, and it was absolutely breathtaking! Even better, we found that the stops we visited were very accessibility-friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
What's one item you can't imagine traveling without?
One thing I always recommend packing is a first aid and medication kit. Mine includes the basics—band-aids, antibiotic ointment, eye drops, and even a dental repair kit. I also make sure to bring along cough and cold medicine, seasickness remedies, anti-diarrheal, and something for an upset stomach. I’ve learned from experience that I often catch a cold while traveling, and I’d much rather be prepared than have to visit the ship’s infirmary or an urgent care while on vacation.
What's your idea of the perfect vacation?
My idea of a perfect vacation is one where I can truly relax and enjoy the destination—whether it’s with my husband and/or my kids and grandkids.
What's the #1 thing you wish more people knew about planning a trip?
I wish more people realized how important it is to plan their vacations early—especially if they need an accessible hotel room or cruise cabin. Booking ahead gives them the best chance to secure the space that fits their needs.
I also wish more people knew that working with a travel advisor doesn’t cost extra compared to planning it themselves. In fact, it can often end up saving them money—and definitely saves them the stress.
