The Secret Weapon Every Smart Traveler Uses

People ask me all the time, "Leigh, when is the best time to go to the Caribbean? To Alaska? To Europe?"
My answer is always the same: shoulder season.
If you've never heard that term, shoulder season is simply the time just before or just after a destination's busiest travel period. It's one of the best-kept secrets in travel.
Here's why.
Peak season means peak everything. Higher prices. Bigger crowds. More competition for flights, hotels, excursions, and dinner reservations.
Shoulder season often gives you the best of both worlds. You still get great weather, but with fewer crowds and prices that are much easier on the budget.
Here's what that looks like in a few popular destinations.
The Caribbean
Most people immediately think about January through March. It's cold at home, so everyone heads south.
Instead, consider mid-September through mid-November. Summer crowds have thinned, prices are often lower, and the weather is still warm and inviting.
I know what you're thinking.
"But Leigh...isn't that hurricane season?"
Technically, yes. But most travelers don't realize that storms don't just appear overnight, and many popular resort islands never experience a direct hit. It's something I monitor closely for my clients, and there are options if weather becomes a concern. I've traveled to the Caribbean during the fall, and many of my clients have too. They consistently come home saying they loved the value and the lighter crowds.
Alaska
When it comes to Alaska, I always recommend taking a close look at May and September.
May offers lower fares, fewer visitors, and beautiful snow-capped scenery. September brings gorgeous fall colors and cruise prices that are often much lower than the middle of summer.
Yes, both months can be a little cooler. For many travelers, though, the savings and more relaxed experience are well worth it.
Europe
I love Europe.
I just don't love Europe in July.
If you'd rather spend your vacation exploring than standing in long lines, consider April, early May, late September, or October.
Hotels are often less expensive. Restaurants are easier to get into. Attractions are less crowded. You can actually enjoy places like the Trevi Fountain without feeling shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of other visitors.
That's the beauty of shoulder season.
The destination is still incredible. The experience is often even better.
Every destination has its sweet spot. Knowing when to go can make just as much difference as deciding where to go.
