Your Cruise Style Has Changed—Has Your Cruise Line?

If you’re an empty nester thinking about cruising, one of the biggest questions I hear is: Which cruise line fits our travel style now? Two of the most popular options I recommend are Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises—and while both are excellent, the onboard vibe is very different. Knowing where your cruise dollars (and time) are best spent can make all the difference.

Royal Caribbean tends to appeal to empty nesters who still enjoy an energetic atmosphere and plenty of choices. Think Broadway-style shows, multiple lounges with live music, casinos that stay lively into the evening, and ships with a mix of social and quiet spaces. Many longtime Royal guests love that they can be as busy—or as relaxed—as they want, especially on mid-sized ships where things feel classic but not overwhelming.

Princess Cruises, on the other hand, is often a favorite for travelers who prefer a calmer, more refined experience. Princess ships shine when it comes to enrichment programming, elegant dining rooms, quieter pool decks, and evenings that revolve around shows, music, and conversation rather than high-energy nightlife. The pace is unhurried, and many empty nesters appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and destination-focused itineraries.

So how do you choose? If you still love a lively casino, lots of dining options, and a more social onboard scene, Royal Caribbean may feel like a comfortable next chapter. If your idea of a perfect cruise includes longer dinners, enrichment talks, quieter evenings, and a strong focus on the destination, Princess may be the better fit.

The good news is that neither option is “better”—they’re just different. The right choice depends on how you want to spend your days and evenings now that your travel style has evolved. My job is helping match you to the cruise line that feels like it was designed for you, not one you’ve outgrown.

If you’re thinking about cruising again and wondering which line fits this season of life, I’d love to help you compare options and find the perfect sailing.
